Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) is a fungus that grows on birch and other hardwood trees. The Chaga Mushroom is superior to the rest of about 150 species of medicinal mushrooms and belongs to the group of herbs distinguished as "adaptogens" that can normalize vital functions inside the human body. The variety that is found on birch is believed to be the most potent because of its high concentration of betulinic acid which is toxic to cancer cells. Chaga is unusual in the mushroom world as it resembles porous wood and is black and hard - similar to lumpy charcoal. Natives of China, Siberia, Finland, Japan, Poland, and North America have all recognised Chaga's medicinal benefits for centuries.
Source and History
Chaga is a fungus that grows on Birch and other hardwood trees and has been used in ancient folk medicines for centuries. Originally introduced to the Western World by Nobel laureate Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the medicinal powers of the Chaga have been recognized by the indigenous peoples of China, Siberia, Finland, Japan, Russia, and Poland for centuries. Demand for the Chaga has depleted natural reserves and scientists are working to develop cultivated alternatives.
In vitro, chaga has demonstrated antitumor, anti-mutagenic, antiviral, antiplatelet, antidiabetic, and analgesic effects. In vivo studies also demonstrate immunomodulating, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Extracts and constituents of chaga have inhibitory and proapoptotic effects against colon cancer and hepatoma cells and inhibited melanoma cell growth in animal models. In some studies Chaga was shown to selectively attack tumor cells with no effect on healthy cells.
Science and Research
According to scientists at the Vector Institute in Russia, Chaga demonstrated low toxicity and a strong antiviral effect against influenza, smallpox and HIV. A study conducted by the Division of Biomedical Sciences, University of Bradford, Bradford, UK also found that Chaga extract effectively reduces oxidative stress in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and other oxidative stress related ailments. Studies from China's Jilin Medical College note abilities to treat malignant tumors, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and AIDS.

Chaga (typically consumed as tea) has been a recognized homepathic remedy for a huge variety of ailments for centuries in the East. Chaga has been prescribed for gastrointestinal distress, generalized pain, fatigue, enhanced muscle growth, and a variety of other maladies. Today it is recognized in the West as an immune-boosting, natural remedy for these and other ailments and is being aggressively studied in the fight against Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrom (AIDS), Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Influenza, Cancer, and a variety of other disease processes. Those who use Chaga routinely report the following benefits:
Improved Immune System
Chaga has an abundance of Beta-D-Glucans which help balance the response of the body's immune system. This means that chaga helps boosts the immune system when necessary, but slows it down when it's overactive.
Pain and Stress Relief
Chaga supports the integrity of blood vessels and provides soothing properties in times of stress. It has been shown to exhibit both anti-inflamatory and pain reducing properties, as well as improving cognition - all of which can reduce stress.
Cancer Treatment and Prevention
Laboratory and animal studies show that chaga can inhibit cancer progression. Though studies in humans are needed, research has shown that Chaga activates immune cells responsible for combating cancer and has proven effective in supporting cancer treatments.
Chaga sclerotium contains massive amounts of the natural black pigment known as melanin, which has high antioxidant levels due to the amount of polyphenols it contains.
Oral administration of polysaccharides from chaga increased exercise endurance and biological measures related to fatigue. These qualities allow for reduced fatigue and improved endurance.
